Concrete Reinforcing Steel Institute Announces Updated Reinforcing Bar Supports Standard

SCHAUMBURG, ILLINOIS — March 31, 2017 -- The Concrete Reinforcing Steel Institute (CRSI) has released an updated version of its standard, Supports for Reinforcement Used in Concrete (ANSI/CRSI RB4.1 2016). This mandatory-language document that has been adopted in the ACI 301 Specification and is appropriate for citation in project specifications. Performance requirements have been added to the new edition in which rated load capacities are assigned to a reinforcement support, based on the ability of the support to meet minimum requirements of load test, impact test, water absorption criteria and concrete consolidation test.

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) accredited the Concrete Reinforcing Steel Institute (CRSI) as a Standards Development Organization (SDO) in April, 2013. The scope of CRSI’s standards activities includes the development and maintenance of consensus standards for design, detailing, fabrication, placement, and construction of assemblies consisting of steel reinforcement and associated products used in concrete and masonry construction.  CRSI currently has five standards.

About the Concrete Reinforcing Steel Institute

Founded in 1924, the Concrete Reinforcing Steel Institute (CRSI) is a technical institute and Standards Developing Organization (SDO) that stands as the authoritative resource steel reinforced concrete construction. Among the Nation’s oldest trade associations, CRSI offers many industry-trusted technical publications, standards documents, design aids, reference materials and educational opportunities.

CRSI is among the Nation’s oldest trade associations whose members represent over 80% of the U.S. manufacturers, fabricators and placers of steel reinforcing bar and related products with over 600 locations in 49 states with over 15,000 employees. The CRSI membership also includes professionals across the country who are involved in the research, design, and construction of steel reinforced concrete. CRSI staff comprises a nationwide region network of industry professionals.

CRSI members produce, fabricate and install approximately 8 million ton of reinforcing steel per year using scrap steel in efficient manufacturing operations. It is estimated that the industry impacts over 75,000 people in steel transportation and placement in North America.
