DATE 2017 opens doors on March 27 at the SwissTech Convention Center in Lausanne, Switzerland

March 15, 2017 -- 2017 is a special year for the world’s favourite electronic systems design and test conference, as we celebrate its 20th edition and it will be held for the first time in Switzerland, at the SwissTech Convention Center on the EPFL campus in Lausanne, from March 27 to 31, 2017.

On Tuesday, the conference will be opened by the plenary keynote speakers Dr. Arvind Krishna from IBM who will talk about “Design Automation in the Era of AI and IoT: Challenges and Pitfalls” and Dr. Doug Burger from Microsoft to talk about “A New Era of Hardware Microservices in the Cloud”. In addition, a keynote lecture from Prof. Giovanni De Micheli (Professor at EPFL and Director of Nano-Tera.ch) will be given on Tuesday on "Distributed Systems for Health and Environmental Monitoring" within the Nano-Tera.ch initiative. On the same day, the Executive Track, including one Executive Panel Session and three Innovative Technologies & Applications (IT&A) Sessions, offers a series of business panels discussing hot topics. Executive speakers from companies leading the design and automation industry will address some of the complexity issues in electronics design and discuss about the advanced technology challenges and opportunities. A special session is dedicated to Ralph Otten, pioneer of physical design, who prematurely died in an accident.

Two Special Days in the programme will focus on areas bringing new challenges to the system design community: Designing Electronics for the Internet of Things Era and Designing Wearable and Smart Medical Devices, each having a full programme of keynotes, panels, tutorials and technical presentations.

During the Special Day on “Electronics for the Internet of Things Era” on Wednesday, there will be first perspective talks from academia (Prof. Lothar Thiele, ETH Zurich) and industry (Prof. Alessandro Curioni, IBM VP, Director IBM Zurich Labs) haring their views and experience from backgrounds of large distributed sensor networks and cognitive computing. Then there will be hot topic sessions and interactive poster presentations that will cover the entire spectrum of research challenges and current industrial practices in IoT devices and computing, storage and communication infrastructure, from smallest form factor sensors to Cloud backbone system. In addition, Keith Willett from Merck Serono will give the luncheon keynote of the day with a presentation titled “Internet of Everything is our Opportunity”.

On Thursday, the special day on “Designing Wearable and Smart Medical Devices” will start with sessions in the morning about new tools and devices for chronic and acute care, as well as for diagnosis and prevention. These sessions will include industrial and academic talks about the recent advances in devices, electronic systems and computing methodologies in the field of medical applications. Then, a keynote from Dr. Sani Nassif from Radyalis LLC will be given about “The Engineering to Medicine Metamorphosis”. Finally, the afternoon part is dedicated to a technical session and an industrial panel to present and discuss the challenges about hardware and software design of next-generation medical devices.

The full conference programme including 9 in-depth tutorials on March 27, the regular conference from March 28 to 30, and 8 full-day parallel Friday Workshops on March 31, 2017, is available online:

In addition, there will be a presentation theatre as part of the exhibition (Tuesday – Thursday). The eleven Exhibition Theatre sessions will highlight visionary talks from industrial leaders and best practice presentations, with contributions from EPFL, Intel, MathWorks, Mentor Graphics, Microsoft, STMicroelectronics and many more. Hot Topics will include smart medical devices, high performance computing, security for IoT, self-powered devices, smart sensors and biochips. Even a free HW platform for building own IoT devices will be provided.

The DATE 2017 Exhibition Theatre will further feature a CV fair where students will meet with companies in an informal setting and discuss opportunities for their professional career. As DATE attendees as well as the companies and institutes located in Lausanne are well known for being highly innovative, visions on technology start-ups will be discussed by academia and industry in a panel discussion in order to support technology entrepreneurship.

Entrance to the exhibition is free of charge. All exhibition theatre sessions (in room 2A) can be visited with a free-of-charge exhibition visitor registration; a conference registration is not required.

Detailed information on the Exhibition Theatre sessions is available online:
