GISinc Launches Solution to Help Track, Control Zika Outbreaks

Company’s New Web-Based Outbreak Surveillance and Control Solution Utilizes Location Technology to Ensure Timely Control and Communication to At-Risk Populations

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — (BUSINESS WIRE) — June 1, 2016GISinc, an industry leader in GIS and location technology solutions for the government and commercial sectors, is providing government and health organizations with a powerful proactive mosquito surveillance and control solution with today’s launch of its Outbreak Surveillance and Control (OSC) solution.

GISinc’s innovative OSC solution is a powerful web-based solution that enables users to visualize infectious disease outbreaks to improve communication and decrease relative risk to the population. Utilizing location technology to enhance biosurveillance initiatives, such as tracking mosquito populations that can transmit viruses like Zika, dengue fever, yellow fever, and West Nile, OSC leverages data from a variety and range of sources to display the locations of outbreaks of vector-borne diseases via a website or mobile device.

By combining information from multiple sources into a single map which is easily accessible via a browser or mobile devices, OSC arms critical stakeholders with the decision support required to take action to reduce relative risk in their neighborhoods. OSC empowers organizations to make location-based decisions that help them to engage citizens, streamline field operations, conduct surveillance on mosquito populations, plan and record treatment operations, and ensure timely communications and control to affected and at-risk populations.

“Zika is the first vector-borne disease that has been proven to cause birth defects, so the ability to track mosquito populations and outbreaks in high-risk communities is critical to protecting the health of unborn babies and other at-risk individuals,” explained Dr. Gavin Macgregor-Skinner, GISinc Health Solutions Consultant and global expert in infectious disease control. “Because Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes have a flight range of less than 200 yards, the adults spend their lifetime in or around houses where their eggs were laid and the risk area of mosquitoes spreading disease is very localized. The ability to visualize where mosquitoes live and resulting disease outbreaks on a map is key to reducing the spread of the disease, alleviating panic and anxieties, and reducing overall risk to the community.”

“Controlling and eradicating fast-moving vector-borne diseases such as Zika takes out-of-the-box thinking and innovative solutions,” stated Wendy Peloquin, account manager at GISinc. “By combining our 25 years of experience in GIS and location-based technology with biosurveillance data collected from a variety of sources, we have developed a powerful, intuitive solution that can provide governments, healthcare organizations, and the public with the information they need to control the spread and reduce the risk of infection from vector-borne diseases. GISinc is going to do whatever we can, using location-based decision making, to help women avoid Zika virus infections during pregnancy.”
