New Alliance will Allow Nuclear Plant Owners / Operators to Comply with Stringent European Regulatory Standards
With the expansion of the European Economic Union to include a further eight Eastern European countries, it is necessary for the nuclear operators in these states to enhance their processes and systems in order to comply with stringent European regulatory standards regarding safety and the environment.
The Aker Kvaerner / Spescom alliance has the combined skills and experience to understand the requirements which drive the nuclear sector, and to deliver high quality information management solutions. Aker Kvaerner is well established as a supplier of project solutions and operations services relating to environmental clean-up in the UK nuclear sector, and Spescom has achieved a 15% share of the US market with its eB Nuclear solution set.
"The fit between Aker Kvaerner and Spescom is ideal, in that it allows the strong project execution and operational skills of Aker Kvaerner to be linked to the abilities which Spescom offers in the tight control and management of information," said Aker Kvaerner Engineering Services' Alliances Manager David Rice. "Many plant owners and operators have suffered in the past from the lack of accurate information about their plant configuration, and we plan to deliver an approach that provides a strong return on investment. Driving down operational costs is one of the key objectives of the alliance."
"Our experience in the nuclear industry in the US shows that Spescom's integrated document, configuration and records management technology is ideally suited for this tightly regulated environment," said Ben Martin, Spescom's Director responsible for UK operation. "Working closely with Aker Kvaerner, we can provide the customer not only with an outstanding return on investment, but also improved regulatory compliance, reduced risk, and enhanced quality and traceability. We know that improved quality of information has a direct impact on operational costs. The alliance with Aker Kvaerner gives both companies an ideal vehicle for delivering some significant benefits to the customer."
In order for all of the functions involved in operating a nuclear plant to be managed successfully, it is essential that the physical infrastructure complies with the requirements that have been mandated by law, through standards, by regulation, or in contracts. In turn, the information that the operator must maintain about the plant must accurately reflect the actual physical configuration itself, and must enable the owner/operator to verify that the requirements are being satisfied. The approach that Aker Kvaerner and Spescom are taking through their alliance is aimed at providing solutions to this requirement.
